SUNFLOWER | ANGEL

Lo-fi is on the rise these days, but it doesn’t mean that it all has to sound the same. Enter Aussie artist SUNFLOWER who recently joined our artist roaster, full of soulful, hip-hop and smooth beats. Lo-fi has become an aesthetic these days, much like how Vaperwave first hit the scene in years past. Each song on ANGEL is somehow tied to itself, and at same point vocal interludes, looped samples of various rhythms and chilled jazzy beats fill your lonely soul. The album ANGEL takes us on a journey from long ago, with 70’s club hits, sax and urban music, usually composed on controllers such as MPC, though let your mind wander a bit. With the likes of Marvin Gaye and other soulful writers of yesterday, these days, artists can take from the past and write a new score for the mind to pick apart. I can compare some of this to St. Pepsi and other Vaperwave that is still considered quite obscure to the listener. Looping and interludes, 808 beats, kicks that fill the room or your car stereo and straightaway each song fades out and into the next, with a new idea, a new form. Vocal-driven songs such as Witchcrash, “You said you would…” sung in low key, mystery and sensual mystery.” Music like this you hear on the hi-fi record player, better yet record the music straight to your MiniDisc and place it on loop.

Review: Naimi – Demonsongs

Naimi – Demonsongs

On first hearing this EP, I was abruptly brought into the world of Naimi. A frightening, demonic world, but with a melodic tenderness that kept me calm and satisfied throughout. In fact, so satisfied that, when the EP ended, I replayed it again immediately from the start! It’s like observing Hell from the sanctity of a protective capsule. Truly thrilling.

EP opener, ‘Let Me Die’, is often abrasive and discordant on first hearing, but keeps restoring your sanctity of whichever ‘safe’ place you listen in with regular melodic breaks. All tracks are often sparse, but that is highly refreshing in a world populated by over-produced sounds and textures.

‘Panic’ leads with a surprisingly cheerful synth, reminiscent of the old ‘Tennis’ Atari game back in 1979. It is combined with a swirling backing which wraps you up and, together with the driving beats, keep you wanting more. It’s like watching a horror movie – you’re scared at what you’re seeing, but safe in the comfort of a cinema or living room so want to keep watching. It also sounds AMAZING on headphones, really claustrophobic but with a vibrancy that breaks through the discordant evil that lurks within.

‘Demon Songs’ is an apt title for the soundscape that Naimi provides here, however the collection of tracks are much more than demonic representation. It’s fluid, lyrical and melodic in a menacing kind of way. Perfect music to accompany reading the latest Stephen King novel, although you wouldn’t give it a spin during your wedding reception disco! It is an EP that leaves you wanting more, so replay value is very high. Definitely a winner.

More please Naimi.

Almark: -ATD-

Almark’s first release to Weatnu Records was the abstract electronic album ATD. A collection of grooving, semi-dark synth pop tracks mixed with atmospheric electronic soundscapes.

Album opener, ’32 bit’, captures that ‘Reproduction’ and ‘Travelogue’ era Human League vibe, dark synthpop without being too dark. There are several tracks like this (‘High Bias’ and ‘IC’ to name two) that delight the ears and soothe the soul. Other tracks (‘Flip-Flop’, ‘Digital Mountains’ and ‘Binary Fathoms’ plus more) create a binary image in the mind’s eye of desolate landscapes filled with wonder and awe. ‘Captain Capstan’ even has, what can only be described as, the sound of an engaged telephone tone pulsating throughout. Title track, ‘ATD’, brings a Kraftwerk feel to the proceedings with good use of a vocoder to add some vocal elements. It is truly captivating stuff.

-ATD- will enhance your record collection. It is an album, perfect for headphones and quiet thinking time, which deserves to be listened to whilst shutting out the world. Allow the textures that Almark creates wash over you and carry you to a distant place where nothing else matters at all. Allow yourself to gaze in wonder at mountainous valleys and galactic stars as Almark transports you beyond the confines of your ordinary world. A magical and safe journey can be had by all.
